Freaky

When serial killer, “The Butcher” (Vince Vaughn) attempts to kill teenager Millie (Kathryn Newton) they find their consciousnesses mysteriously swap bodies. Now Millie has twenty-four hours to swap back to her real body or be permanently stuck. Whilst “The Butcher” discovers that being a teenage girl opens up murderous possibilities to him.

Freaky is a horror comedy from writer/director Christopher Landon, the man who brought us Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. Opening on Wednesday 11th and finishing on a very freaky Friday the 13th we are treated to some very funny fish out of water comedy and a decent amount of gory deaths.

Most of the fun can be found in Vince Vaughn’s performance. Physically he is hilarious portraying a teenage girl unable to get used to her newfound height and strength. His attempts to convince his friends that he is really Millie are also great with him reciting poems, telling them stories only she would know and performing cheerleader routines. Kathryn Newton on the other hand has to do the reverse, switching from a chatty teen to a violent man with no social skills. When she realises she does not have the same physical strength anymore is nearly as amusing.

The plot features jokes about pronouns and is willing to discuss gender and sexual fluidity to some extent. All whilst people run around with chainsaws and sharp knifes of course. On the violence and gore front the film is mostly bookended with its quota. There are some inventive and gross deaths on hand with the middle section set aside for the humour.

Freaky may not please hardcore horror fiends but it is definitely a gateway film and suitable for the more casual film goer not normally happy to watch slasher films.

  1. Spot on review Phil. Director Christopher Landon develops fun characters around his principal stars which makes it even more engaging (the same can be said for the Happy Death Day movies). Kathryn Newton is a star in the making. There is talk of a cross over movie with Happy Death Day, I would cheerfully pay to watch that.
