The Old Guard

Just to complicate matters further the team have a shared vision that a new immortal has appeared in the world.

The Old Guard is a very enjoyable Netflix action movie with serviceable action set pieces, interesting world building and a good cast. Based on a comic book created by author Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez the set up is that our immortals walk the earth attempting to do good in the world waiting for their time to die, as it turns out that even immortality has an end. They also have a bond with each other meaning that they become aware of each other’s existence. As the screenplay is also written by Rucka it is fairly faithful as adaptations go.

The leader and oldest member of our group is Andromache of Scythia or Andy to her friends (Charlize Theron). And her team is made up of Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marianelli). Theron imbues a world weariness to our leader, someone who believes humanity is getting worse and their efforts to help are failing. Each of our group have a couple of small moments of backstory, Joe and Nicky met during the crusades and Booker fought for Napoleon. Of course one thing that this means is that all of them are pretty adept with a sword allowing the film to have the incredibly cool look of warriors that use guns and swords in a fight. The newcomer to the group is U.S. Marine Nile (Kiki Layne) who has to struggle with the idea that in order to protect her family she may have to cut all ties with them.

When the team make the error of doing a second job for ex-CIA agent Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) they find themselves being hunted down by Merrick (Harry Melling who is most famous for playing Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter). His plan is that he will be able to make a product that can prolong life and make him millions.

With a clear set up for a sequel and a new set of comics to base it on perhaps The Old Guard will grow into a memorable franchise. Right now its an entertaining diversion.
