The Hustle

mv5bmtc3mdcynze5n15bml5banbnxkftztgwnze2mde0nzm40._v1_When rough around the edges con artist Penny (Rebel Wilson) intrudes on the suave and smooth con artist Josephine’s (Anne Hathaway) hunting grounds the two enter into a bet to see who is allowed to remain. Whoever can scam tech millionaire Thomas (Alex Sharp) first wins.

Based on the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Michael Caine, Steve Martin and Glenne Headly, which itself was based on the 1964 film Bedtime Story starring Marlon Brando, David Niven and Shirley Jones, this is a remake with a gender flipped cast where women prey on men.

In terms of plot aside from the opening introductions to our two leads the story sticks closely to the 1988 film. Rebel Wilson provides her standard crude brand of humour whilst Anne Hathaway is the absolute star of the film. Her costumes alone are pretty impressive, but the fun she has with her accents and superiority complex is infectious. There are even some moments where it’s unclear that she isn’t a split second from breaking character to laugh.

There are Rebel Wilson related moments that fall flat and she can’t compete with Steve Martin, but overall it’s perfectly good fun.
